Joe Cain Day

Joe Cain day is a huge day in Mobile. It is called the 'People's Parade' and is a day that anyone can put on a costume and join in the parade. The Joe Cain parade is made up of many smaller societies such as the Cain Raisers, The Bums and most well known Cain's Merry Widows. The newspaper did an long article about them this year.

Joe Cain day is one of my favorite days of Mardi Gras. The leader of the parade is the forth person to portray Chief Slac, Wayne Dean, my dad. This year was his twentieth time to lead the parade. There is another group that paraded for the first time this year in Joe Cain and they are The Mistresses. These ladies dress all in red with veils covering their faces. They seem to stir things up a bit especially with the Widows. I think the more the merrier and they make things more interesting. These ladies seem to have a great time.

After the parade I went with my dad to make an appearance at the Maisville Mystics and then headed back downtown to watch the evening parades La Krewe de Bienville and La Femme Cassette. I then went home and changed for the balls that evening.

Mystics of Time

Saturday was a day of parades. The Floral parade started things off at 12 noon. The Knights of Mobile followed and then the Order of Angels rolled right in tow. That evening one of the most well know and well attended of the parades leading up to Mardi Gras Day, the Mystics of Time rolled through the streets with their famous dragons leading the way. The Dragons, Vernadean the mom along with her little girl Verna and boy Dean are a crowd favorite. Vernadean breaths fire and smoke as she slinks her way through the streets.

After the Mystics of Time parade I went over to a very secret organization's reception. The Krewe de Crude have been around for about fifteen years. They have a very secret party and nobody from the media is invited. At about 8:30pm they stage their very short but entertaining street parade. The king for this celebration was King Viagra. After watching the parade I headed back to the auditorium for the Mystics of Time ball.
